A festival programme designed to guide, surprise and engage

alt=""

Art direction, print craft and selected AR moments turned a citywide event programme into both a dependable guide and a richer festival object.

Limerick Arts Festival brought performance, street culture and creative activity into the city, and its printed programme had several jobs to do at once. It needed to organise schedules, carry the energy of the event and remain easy to use in busy settings. The project combined art direction, print specification and selected augmented reality interactions, adding movement, sound and context where they supported the programme while keeping practical event information legible and dependable on the page.

The Challenge

The programme had to carry citywide creative energy while still helping people find the right event at the right time.

Festival print is used on the move, often in crowded or unfamiliar settings, so hierarchy and schedule clarity could not be sacrificed for visual effect. At the same time, the programme needed enough character to represent performance, street culture and the wider atmosphere of the event. A further opportunity was to connect selected printed moments with richer digital material without making interaction a requirement for basic use.

The Solution

A strong print system did the practical work, with AR reserved for moments where it could add context or atmosphere.

Art direction, graphic design, print specification and visual narrative were developed first as a coherent physical programme. Selected pages then became visual triggers for animation, video or sound, allowing audiences to move from the printed object into additional festival material. Because the core guide remained complete on paper, the digital layer felt like an extension of the experience rather than a barrier to schedules or essential information.

The Process

Every spread was tested as part of the full schedule and as a standalone cultural poster.

We established information hierarchy and reader flow before developing the visual rhythm of individual spreads. Paper, scale and print finish gave the programme a deliberate physical presence, while AR interactions were selected only where motion, audio or added context improved the connection to a performance. That discipline kept the technology purposeful and allowed the booklet to remain a useful guide throughout the festival.
